Frank Campbell, CEO of Irwin Science Education, England
Having worked at the University of Exeter, Frank Campbell took up the senior research and development Laboratory Supervisor role for Griffin and George. This was in the 1970’s when major design and development programmes were improving the Nuffield Science Project in the UK.
These significant developments included apparatus such as a schools Heated Column Gas Chromatograph, Velocity of Light Apparatus, Gravitational Constant Apparatus , Millikan Oil Drop Experiment, Tensile Test Machines for schools and universities, Kits for investigating Polymers, Nuclear and atomic Physics experiments, Circular Motion apparatus, the introduction of School Lasers and many more. These products were all developed within the Technical department working with specialist Technical Officers. Towards the end of his role he was involved in the first electronic multifunction units, using sensors that were developed into the Data Loggers of today.
During this time Frank was also responsible for the technical training of overseas Distributors and school Teachers and Technicians.
Frank’s international role covered Europe, the Middle and Far East working on major projects sponsored by the World Bank, the UN, the Asian Development Bank and the EU.
Frank then Left Griffin and George having seen through the transition to Fisons Scientific and then Fisher Scientific now Thermo Fisher, to take on the management of the Scientific Equipment Division of Irwin, then Irwin Desman, the Desman referred to the function of design and manufacture.
This role saw Irwin grow into one of the largest manufacturers of science equipment in the world. During his time at Irwin, Frank sat on the consultative committee advising the EU with regard to obtaining and exemption for research and development equipment to sit outside of the EMC regulations which were critical, not only to research and development but also to promote practical science investigations in education. This exemption is still in place within the EU today.
Frank then left Irwin to set up a new company called STE which was then sold in order to take Irwin back into UK ownership from an American Group.
Since then, Irwin has resumed the design and manufacture function wholly in the UK and the products are sold throughout the world.
Irwin now work closely with ITEC Global offering a unique package of consultancy in the development of strategies for teaching science, the provision of apparatus and teacher training.
